I have four favourite mugs.

Alas! It used to be five!

These mugs are one of the first things I see each morning

when I start my day with a very large, very milky, hot cup of

coffee.

My first coffee simply must be the largest mug you have

ever seen! More football sized than mug sized, (nothing

to do with the size of my mouth) and it starts my day nicely!

This morning, I reached for my mug, made a steaming hot aromatic coffee, and cuddled it in my hands to savour, but soon noticed it was stood in a puddle of coffee! Reaching for a cloth I mopped up the spills and cuddled my coffee, but coffee continued to trickle over the worktop!

Closer inspection revealed a long hairline crack, which had progressively weakened the mug until it was no longer fit for purpose. This leaky vessel is of no use to me now, so it is now destined for the dump.

Isaiah warned God’s people that sin can start like a weakening crack.

‘Sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant’ Isa 30:13

Sin, selfishness, misdemeanours, hedonism, disobedience however small, may feel insignificant, but like a hairline crack sin can spread and weaken us until we are ineffective vessels for the Kingdom, and unfit for purpose.

May God help us to examine our hearts today and not fall into that hairline crack trajectory today.
